Overview

Crumb is made by Hideaway Labs. This policy explains what information we collect through the Crumb iOS app and the startcrumb.com website, how we use it, and the choices you have. The short version: we collect what we need to run the product, we don't sell your data, and you can delete your account and data at any time.

Information we collect

Account information. When you create an account we collect your email address and, if you sign in with Apple, the name and email your Apple ID shares with us. Authentication is handled by Clerk, our sign-in provider.

Menu photos. The core of Crumb is scanning menus. When you photograph a menu, the photo is sent to our servers, analyzed, and stored along with your results so we can improve menu reading over time, re-check dishes as our analysis gets better, and keep restaurant menu data fresh. Menu photos are pictures of menus, not people; please don't include anything personal in a scan. If a photo accidentally captures something you want removed, email us and we'll delete it. Photos are used to provide and improve the service, not for advertising.

Dietary preferences. The diets, ingredient rules, and goals you set in the app, so we can tell you how each dish fits. This can include information you choose to give us about how you eat, such as allergen concerns. We only use it to power your results.

Location (optional). If you grant location access, we use your approximate location to show restaurants near you. You can use core scanning features without granting location, and you can revoke access at any time in iOS Settings.

Purchase information. If you subscribe to Crumb Pro, Apple processes the payment. We receive subscription status (not your payment details) through Apple and RevenueCat so we can unlock your features.

Usage and device information. Basic analytics about how the app and site are used (screens viewed, features used, device model, OS version, crash data) so we can fix problems and improve the product.

Waitlist email. If you join the waitlist on our website, we store the email address you give us to tell you about the launch and occasional product updates. Every email includes an unsubscribe link.

How we use AI to analyze menus

Menu photos and extracted menu text are processed by AI service providers (currently Anthropic) to estimate calories and macros, evaluate diet fit, and flag items worth a question. These providers process the data to deliver results and, under our API agreements, do not use it to train their models. Estimates are generated from menu text and general food knowledge; they are informational and can be wrong. See our Terms for the full disclaimer.

How we share information

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with third parties for their own advertising. We share data only with service providers who process it on our behalf to run Crumb:

  • Clerk (sign-in and account management)
  • Apple (App Store payments and Sign in with Apple)
  • RevenueCat (subscription status)
  • Anthropic (AI analysis of menu photos and text)
  • Supabase (database and storage)
  • Railway and Vercel (hosting for our servers and website)
  • Cloudflare (DNS and network services)
  • Resend (email delivery)

We may also disclose information if required by law, or as part of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, in which case this policy would continue to apply to your data.

Data retention and deletion

We keep your data while your account is active. You can delete your account from inside the app (Profile, then Delete account) or by emailing crumb@hideawaylabs.io. Deleting your account removes your profile, preferences, and scan history from our systems within 30 days, except where we are legally required to keep records. Menu photos and the menu data extracted from them describe restaurants rather than people, so they may be retained in our restaurant menu database after account deletion; email us if you want a specific photo removed. Waitlist emails are deleted on request or when you unsubscribe.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information, and to object to certain processing. We honor these requests for everyone, not just where the law requires it. Email crumb@hideawaylabs.io and we'll take care of it.

Security

Data is encrypted in transit, credentials are stored using industry-standard practices, and access to production systems is limited to the small team that runs Crumb. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to keep your data safe and will notify you if a breach affects your information.

Children

Crumb is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes, we will update the date at the top of this page and let you know in the app or by email. Continued use of Crumb after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
